PIRACY PROTECTION IN CHINA.

As regards the formation of the new anti-piracy

unit under the Hong Kong police, we are in receipt of a letter from Hong Kong dated May 2nd, in which our people

write:-

"The Inspector-General of Police is also "trying to arrange for an ex colonel (British "Army) at present in Weihaiwei to be engaged "by the Government to command the guards and

to deal with all unit piracy measures."

This is all right, so far as it goes;

understood, when our deputation was received by Mr.

Ammon at the Admiralty, that a serving soldier or

sailor was to be seconded from time to time as

commandant of this piracy unit, together with a few Warrant Officers and/or N.C.0's. as headquarters. We regard something of the kind as essential for the maintenance of proper discipline, without which the unit will be useless, and we shall be obliged if you will tell

us what has been done about this idea.
